Most Comfortable Shoes for Standing All Day
Buying GuidesQuick Discussion
The most comfortable shoes for standing all day combine thick cushioning, real arch support and a fit with room for your feet to swell. For most people that means a max-cushion walking or running shoe such as the HOKA Bondi 9 or Brooks Ghost 18. Slippery floors call for a slip-rated shoe like the Clove Classic.
Most cushioning for concrete: HOKA Bondi 9 ($175), which carries the APMA Seal of Acceptance and comes in Regular, Wide and X-Wide (HOKA).
Best all-round pick: Brooks Ghost 18 ($150), sold in four widths from narrow to 4E (Brooks).
For nurses: Clove Classic ($150), with a fluid-resistant upper and certification to the ASTM F3445 slip standard (Clove).
Flat or wide feet: Brooks Addiction Walker 2 ($140) or New Balance 1540v4 ($199.99), which goes up to 6E (New Balance).
Kitchens and clinics: Dansko Professional ($145), an APMA-accepted clog with a rocker bottom (Dansko).
Disclosure: Atoms publishes this guide and makes sneakers. We did not wear-test these shoes, and we kept our own shoe out of the ranking. It is covered separately near the end.

Where a rating comes only from a retailer and not the brand, we say so. Check the brand's own page if a certification is a requirement at your workplace.
How did we choose these shoes?
We did not wear-test these shoes. The picks come from brand specifications, the APMA Seal of Acceptance directory, lab measurements from RunRepeat, podiatrist guidance and what workers recommend in online communities. We dropped models whose specs we could not confirm on a brand or major retailer site.
Two changes this season are worth knowing. The New Balance 990v6 is being replaced by the 990v7 on November 6, 2026, so we left it out (Gear Patrol). And the newest Brooks models were not yet in the APMA directory when we checked, although their predecessors are.
Which shoes are best for your job?
The right shoe depends on what you stand on and how much you move. The average US civilian worker spends 55.1% of the workday standing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Food preparation and serving workers stood for 97.6% of the day in 2020 (BLS).
Nurses and healthcare workers
Start with the Clove Classic. Clove says all its shoe models are certified to the ASTM F3445-21 slip standard, the upper resists fluids, and the shoe carries the APMA Seal. If you walk long hallways, the HOKA Bondi 9 gives more cushioning. If you stand at a bedside or bench, the Dansko Professional is an APMA-accepted clog with a rocker bottom.
Kitchen and restaurant staff
Slip resistance comes before softness on wet or greasy floors. The HOKA Bondi SR has a water-resistant leather upper, and a major retailer lists it as meeting the ASTM F2913-19 slip test. Fleet Feet lists the Brooks Addiction Walker 2 as passing SATRA TM144. HOKA's own page names neither standard, so confirm with the brand if your employer requires one.
In Reddit kitchen communities, the brands mentioned most are Birkenstock, Dansko and Crocs, according to a tally of posts from r/KitchenConfidential and r/Chefit (GummySearch).
Retail and warehouse work on concrete
Concrete gives nothing back, so pick the thickest cushioning you can. The HOKA Bondi 9 measured 41.3 mm at the heel in RunRepeat's lab, and HOKA says its MetaRocker sole helps you roll forward (RunRepeat). The Brooks Ghost Max 4 also has a rocker and suits jobs that mix standing with walking.
Teachers, baristas and stylists
If you stand in one area but move around it, a balanced daily trainer works well. The Brooks Ghost 18 is the safest starting point because it comes in four widths. The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 has a softer feel under the heel for people who prefer plush cushioning.
Front-of-house and dress codes
Where athletic shoes are not allowed, look at leather options. The New Balance 928v3 has a leather upper and comes in widths up to 6E. The HOKA Bondi SR uses full-grain leather, and the Dansko Professional clog does not look like a sneaker.
Which shoes are best for flat feet or wide feet?
Flat feet need structure, not just softness. The Brooks Addiction Walker 2 and New Balance 1540v4 both use a medial support system to limit inward rolling, and the 1540v4 carries the APMA Seal. For wide feet, the New Balance 928v3 and 1540v4 go up to 6E, and the Ghost 18 and Gel-Nimbus 28 go to 4E.
Brooks calls its Addiction Walker 2 technology an Extended Progressive Diagonal Rollbar (Brooks). New Balance uses a feature it calls ROLLBAR on the 1540v4 and 928v3 (New Balance). If you use custom orthotics, check that the insole is removable before you buy.
What should you look for in a shoe for standing all day?
Look for arch support across the middle of the shoe, a cushioned footbed, a small heel rise rather than a flat sole, and enough room for your toes. The shoe should feel right in the store. Podiatrists and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons agree there is no break-in period.
Arch support: podiatrist Melissa Lockwood, DPM, suggests a twist test. A shoe that twists easily through the middle gives less support (Prevention, via AOL).
Cushioning: Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Christina Schilero, DPM, recommends a supportive running or walking shoe with a cushioned footbed (Cleveland Clinic).
Heel: podiatrists at Hospital for Special Surgery advise against fully flat shoes and say a small heel is better (HSS).
Fit: try shoes on late in the day, leave about half an inch beyond your longest toe, and fit your larger foot (AAOS).
Our guide on how sneakers should fit covers toe room and heel slip. For the parts of the shoe, see how EVA foam works, what an insole does and what an outsole does.
Is a running shoe or a work shoe better for standing all day?
A cushioned running or walking shoe is better if you cover ground during your shift. A work shoe is better if your floor is wet, greasy or hazardous, because most running shoes have no slip rating or toe protection. Many people who stand and walk do best in a max-cushion trainer with a rocker sole.
Most picks in our list are running or walking shoes because they have the thickest cushioning. The clogs and slip-rated shoes are there for jobs where safety rules come first. Our guide to wearing running shoes for walking covers where that advice changes.
Do anti-fatigue mats and compression socks help?
Yes, as part of the fix. A review co-written by a NIOSH researcher found that mats and softer floors reduced leg discomfort, mostly after several hours of standing, and that compression stockings reduced reported fatigue and swelling (Waters and Dick, 2014).
The same review found shoe insoles about as comfortable as mats. Canada's workplace safety agency says mats help but are not enough alone, and that footwear, flooring and work design all matter (CCOHS). Start with light compression socks, and ask a doctor first if you have a circulation condition.
How often should you replace shoes you stand in all day?
Replace them when the midsole feels flat or your feet start aching again in shoes that used to feel fine. The APMA's general rule for running and walking shoes is every 600 to 800 miles or six to eight months (APMA). No medical body publishes a standing-specific interval.
Podiatrist Mark Mendeszoon, DPM, told Men's Health that work shoes should be replaced at least once a year, or sooner if pain starts (Men's Health, via AOL). Our guide to how long shoes really last covers the signs of wear.
What do workers who stand all day recommend?
Workers mostly recommend HOKA, Brooks, Dansko, Skechers and Keen, and they complain most about price and shoes that wear out fast. Those are the top themes in a tally of Reddit work-shoe threads (GummySearch).
In the same tally, Dansko clogs got credit for lasting years, while some foam running shoes were said to wear out in about six months. When The Daily Beast asked baristas, servers and cooks in July 2026, two named the HOKA Bondi 8, a chef named Shoes for Crews clogs and a barista named Birkenstock's Super Birki clog (The Daily Beast).
Where does the Atoms Model 001 fit?
We make Atoms, so we kept it out of the ranking. The Atoms Model 001 is $179 and has stretch laces, and Atoms says its sole adds slip resistance. It is an everyday sneaker, not a max-cushion work shoe.
If you spend twelve hours on concrete, one of the cushioned picks above will treat your feet better. If you want a shoe for a lighter standing day that you can also wear after work, the Model 001 is worth a look. Atoms offers 30-day US returns, with a $10 fee or free store credit. If you want a white shoe you can stand in and wear after work, see our list of the most comfortable white sneakers. See all Atoms shoes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best shoes for standing for long hours?
For most people, a max-cushion shoe such as the HOKA Bondi 9 or Brooks Ghost 18. Both have thick midsoles and come in wide sizes. Avoid thin, flat soles, even if they feel comfortable in the store.
What shoes are best for 12-hour shifts?
Pick the most cushioning you can wear, and leave room for swelling. The HOKA Bondi 9 and Brooks Ghost Max 4 are good starting points. Try shoes on late in the day, when your feet are at their largest.
What are the best shoes for standing on concrete all day?
The HOKA Bondi 9. Its 41.3 mm heel was one of the tallest RunRepeat measured among our picks. Add an anti-fatigue mat at any fixed station.
What shoes do nurses wear for 12-hour shifts?
Many nurses choose the Clove Classic, which is slip-rated and fluid-resistant, a Dansko Professional clog, or a max-cushion running shoe like the HOKA Bondi 9 for long hallways.
What shoes help with heel pain from standing?
Look for a cushioned footbed, firm arch support and a small heel rise. If heel pain lasts more than a few weeks, see a podiatrist, because shoes alone may not fix it.
Are running shoes good for standing all day?
Usually, yes. They have the most cushioning. If your floor is wet or greasy, choose a slip-rated work shoe instead.
How often should I replace shoes I stand in all day?
When the cushioning feels flat or pain returns. The APMA suggests six to eight months for running and walking shoes, and one podiatrist suggests at least yearly for work shoes.
Do insoles help if I cannot change my work shoes?
They can. A review of standing-at-work studies found insoles about as comfortable as anti-fatigue mats. A supportive insole is the cheapest upgrade if your dress code is strict.
